Then they discover it’s located next to a gas station or facing a noisy highway when they go to view it. That’s a big waste of both time and money. Above all, location should always come first. Even more so if you are out of your comfort zone, buying at long distance, somewhere you don’t know in-depth. The Canary Islands
The Canary Islands enjoy one of the world’s best climates. It’s often described as the ‘eternal spring’ with temperatures averaging 22ºC throughout the year. The islands are ideal for permanent relocation or second homes which can be used at any time of year. Year-round rental demand makes buy-to-let investment another option. A paradise for sports enthusiasts with golf, surfing, cycling, athletics year-round. In addition, the special climate means it’s also ideal for relaxing in the sun even in the winter months. The Canary Islands don’t do winter.
There’s variety in the terrain, from mountains and remote rural areas to urban centres and stunning beaches. There’s a range of sand colours to choose from; golden, white, black and red, all set against deep clear blue skies and turquoise water. There are eight islands and each island is different, special and unique. So, searching for the right property in the location that suits you best is even more of a challenge.
The different climates, terrain, flora and fauna found on Gran Canaria have led to it being referred to as ‘the miniature continent’. Many of Gran Canaria’s stunning backdrops have featured in films such as A Fistful of Dollars, Moby Dick, Clash of the Titans and Wild Oats. The more mountainous north is cooler while most sun-seekers head for the warmer sandy southern and eastern beaches. And as on other islands in the Canaries, it’s volcanic past means sand colour varies.
In 2005 a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve was established on Gran Canaria, taking in about 40% of the island. The fact that around 100 plant species grow nowhere else in the world have led to claims that Gran Canaria is to botany what the Galapagos are to zoology. Gran Canaria is a great location for all kinds of water sports and deep sea fishing, horse riding and rock climbing. Twelve beaches were awarded Blue Flag status in 2016.
Both in terms of population and area, Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands. El Teide, an active volcano which last erupted in 1909 is Spain’s highest peak, 3,178m (12,198ft) above sea level. The extraordinary lunar landscape has been used as the backdrop in many movies, including One Million Years B.C., and Clash of the Titans. The island’s capital Santa Cruz buzzes with life year round but really explodes every spring at Carnival time, one of the world’s largest street festivals.
The landscape in the mountainous northern part of Tenerife is lush and green while you have a choice of sand colour depending on which beaches you head for. Go east and south for golden sand, the darker, almost black, sand is in the west and north. Fifteen Tenerife beaches and two marinas have Blue Flag status. There are two UNESCO World Heritage sites on Tenerife; the Mount Teide National Park and the town of San Cristóbal de La Laguna, founded in the 15th century. The colonial buildings are recognised as an architectural link between Europe and the Americas.
Lanzarote is the island of the lunar landscape with lava fields, black volcanic rock and around 300 volcano cones. In spite of this, no active volcanic eruption has been recorded since 1824. However, the 1730 eruption in what is now the Timanfaya National Park was one of the biggest in recorded history. The lava flow lasted for six months.
There are beaches of white sand, crystal clear water and brilliant blue skies. Six Lanzarote beaches and one marina have Blue Flag status. No July rainfall has ever been recorded on Lanzarote since modern records began, The average annual total is between 125 – 150mm.
The volcanic environment makes Lanzarote a superb caving and diving destination. In addition, there are perfect conditions for sailing, surfing and wind-surfing enthusiasts throughout the year. Road cyclists enjoy some of the emptiest roads in Europe.
There is a recognised Canarian architectural style of stone buildings in the Canary Islands. However, Lanzarote has a different and somewhat special look. Lanzarote’s most famous son, architect César Manrique developed a Cubist style, with green paintwork and onion-domed chimney pots.
Some of Europe’s best beach are in Fuerteventura, vast expanses of pristine sand and huge dunes by warm turquoise waters. Not for nothing is the island often referred to as Europe’s Caribbean. Six beaches fly the coveted Blue Flag. Sports enthusiasts can come at any time of the year for a wide range of activities. These include deep sea fishing, scuba diving, surfing, sailing, kite and wind surfing, golf, tennis, horse riding and mountain biking.
Star-gazing is possible throughout the year in the Canaries due to the clear skies and low light pollution. As a result, La Palma is the location of the multi-national telescope known as the Great Canary Telescope. Situated on a 2,267m volcanic peak scientific observations began in 2009. It is currently the world’s largest single-aperture optical telescope.
La Palma is known locally as La Isla Bonita, the Beautiful Island. It has outstanding beaches with fine black sand and crystal-clear waters but it’s not primarily a sun and sand resort. Around La Palma the sea bed is volcanic. The very deep waters with fissures and caves are perfect for scuba diving. On land, ramblers, hikers, mountain bikers and cyclists can use a 1,000km network of signposted paths.
Sub-tropical cloud and rain forests once covered almost all of Southern Europe. The Garajonay National Park, created in 1981, is one of the last of this type of forest. It achieved UNESCO World Heritage status in 1986. Tracks criss-cross the reserve so trekking is one of the main tourist activities in La Gomera. UNESCO also recognised La Gomera’s unique whistling language from pre-hispanic times and which is still in use today.
La Gomera’s population is just 24,000. The airport’s runway is too short to take international jets so visitors arrive by island-hopping turboprops or ferry. If you are more interested in wildlife than nightlife La Gomera could be for you.
El Hierro is the most westerly of the Canary Islands. It is the first island in the world to produce 100% of its energy from renewables. As a result, El Hierro has UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status. The population is 11,000 and visitors arrive by ferry or turboprop connecting flights from one of the larger islands. In geological terms it is the baby of the Canaries, formed by volcanic activity under the Atlantic ocean about one million years ago. In comparison, the other islands appeared between 12 and 20 million years ago. El Hierro is a walker’s paradise, with ancient tracks through lava fields and laurisilva forests.
Most people count seven islands in the Canaries. But they forget La Graciosa, a tiny dot 2kms off Lanzarote’s north coast with a population of just 700. Apart from a few licensed vehicles for essential services no others are allowed. Roads are unpaved sand and you can walk around the island in just a couple of hours. There’s a regular ferry service to and from Lanzarote.
