Jan Westwood first arrived in Mallorca 24 years ago at the start of a career in yachting and yachting management. She travelled the Mediterranean extensively aboard both privately owned and charter vessels from 30 to 52 metres, cruising Spanish, French, Italian and Croatian waters as well as the Aegean Islands. She also spent time in the Red Sea and in Scandinavian waters, aboard a supply yacht accompanying one of the Whitbread 60 Round the World finalists on its European pre race tour.
Over the seasons, she spent several winters during refit periods in Mallorca, based in Palma and subsequently on one of the first boats to enter Puerto Portals when it opened in 1986. The marina has since become the most prestigious on the island, frequented by sports personalities and the Spanish royal family.
Jan soon discovered “the other Mallorca”, an island of incredibly diverse landscapes, and in 1991 decided to look for a property inland as a tranquil base in between trips to sea. It was a long, frustrating process and a sharp learning curve before she found her dream home in the rural southwest.
In 1999, Jan came ashore and in light of her personal house hunting experience started the first property search business in Mallorca. With her intimate knowledge of the island and contacts formed over the years, Jan, whose second language is German, has since successfully worked with a very broad range of buyers, each with their own, unique criteria.
Properties successfully acquired have been as varied as the buyers themselves, from the blueprint lock-up-and-leave holiday apartment to modern city lofts, classic sea view villas, fincas in the mountains, stone cottages needing renovation, private estates and land for construction.
Buying property abroad can be extremely time consuming and what should be a pleasurable experience can become costly and frustrating, compounded by unfamiliarity with the different areas of the island and exactly what they have to offer. Many buyers today begin their research online, and although there’s a vast amount of information available, it can be conflicting and often out of date.
Jan believes firmly that the key to success, in addition to knowledge of what’s available in terms of property, is primarily about understanding the buyer’s motives, lifestyle and priorities, and then working closely together to source the very best option for them, wherever this happens to be on the island.
