In July 2006, local foreign residents, together with the largest Balearic environmental protection group, Grup Balear d'Ornitologia i Defensa de la Naturalesa, denouced the company Marmacen Sol S.L. for constructing 24 apartments with a swimming poll and parking area on land in Carrer Tonya, the only designated green zone in Cala Llamp.
The resulting enquiry found Eugenio Hidalgo, the former mayor of Andratx municipality, had granted an illegal construction licence and that it had also been granted 'in the record time of fifteen days'. The case spearheaded the subsequent investigation, known as Operation Voramar, of more than seventy licences in the municipality. Hidalgo was arrested, together with two town planning officers, and given a four year prison sentence.
On a positive note, since the appointment of a new mayor, Xisco Femenias, all matters relating to licences and construction are completely above board. Furthermore, tenders have been accepted for sweeping improvements in infrastructure (services, street lighting, resurfacing and pavements) in all the surrounding urbanisations constructed in the 1980s and previously unrecognised by the council. This will give Puerto Andratx a very welcome facelift.
Following a three year battle the courts have finally decided that four apartment blocks in Cala Llamp in Puerto Andratx (pictured) must be demolished.
